Frostbite

THINGS WERE different the next morning, but not in a bad way, surprisingly. Joy seemed kind of cautious around Chad. But not as if he were afraid. On the contrary. To Chad, it seemed as if Joy were waiting for something. Like for Chad to make a move.

Obviously, that could very well have been wishful thinking on his part. After all, Joy had not just noticed Chad was having a nasty erection when he was supposed to impersonate a pristine, family-friendly snowman last night, he’d also witnessed how Chad had made a total fool of himself in front of his friends afterward. Chad had stood stock-still wrapped in his bedsheets staring at everybody for twenty seconds straight, then awkwardly stamped his feet for another twenty before Mel had shouted, “I know: Frosty the Snowman!” And then, after everyone had cheered her, she’d insisted on completing Chad’s look by painting his nails with silver polish. She’d had quite a few glasses of her mulled wine too.

While Chad sat on a chair in his snowman costume, condemned to stay put until the varnish had dried, Franky had circled him like a hyena its prey, repeatedly dropping comments on how Chad’s fingers were just so freakishly large. When Joy had told him to shut up, he’d started singing “Frosty the Snowman” and clapping his hands until everyone had joined in and urged Chad to get up and dance. Chad had done two full rounds around the kitchen table just to keep things from getting worse.

No. Joy couldn’t possibly still think of him as sexy or anything anymore. If he ever had, which he probably hadn’t.

On the other hand—

Hadn’t there been a weird glitter in Joy’s eyes when he’d watched him dance last night? A glitter that had nothing to do with his fancy eye shadow? And what about the way Joy’s gaze kept flitting over Chad this morning, time and time again? What about the way his cheeks reddened every time their eyes met?

When he’d gotten up from the breakfast table just now, he’d touched Chad’s knee with a fleeting brush of his index finger. It had been the most casual of gestures, but it had felt like a caress.

And he’d allowed Chad to keep his arm around him for at least one or two seconds longer than strictly necessary in his bedroom last night. In the presence of hard evidence that Chad was interested.

There, he’d created a silly, saucy pun. The very kind the gang from Harry’s Hair Dreams thrived on.

Chad watched Joy standing at the sink, rinsing his muesli bowl, humming to himself. It seemed he was in the best of spirits. When he passed Chad on the way to the bathroom to get ready to leave, he threw Chad a smile. It was one of his lovely, open, heartfelt smiles, and it was impossible to not feel cherished in its shine.

For a moment, Chad pictured himself with Joy. At the altar, for that was how far he was already gone. And Franky, Mel, and Harry stood behind them, singing not “Frosty the Snowman” but “Marry You.
